podcast show notes ~ chris trevas and the celebration art show

Today’s podcast guest is one of my all-time favorite Star Wars artists. Chris Trevas has been making official Star Wars art since he began contributing art to the West End Roleplaying game in 1995. Since then, he’s done tons of stuff for Star Wars, including sourcebooks, merchandise, Celebration badges (we’ll get to that), and more. Scroll on to see some examples of the awesome stuff that Chris has done and to see all of his stunning art from the Celebration Art Show!

Now let’s take a look at the exclusive prints Chris has made for Star Wars Celebration ever since the tradition began back in 2005! We talk through a bunch of these in the episode. This started with CIII (“The Circle Is Now Complete”, below left) and CIV (below right), which was a piece to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary. This print was also available at Celebration Europe, which was just a few months later.

Next for Celebrations V and VI, Chris started leaning in to the concept of painting familiar original trilogy scenes from a different angle, or scenes that just precede or follow what we see on screen. I love this idea and as far as I’m concerned, they’re all canon! Below you’ll see “The Hunter and His Prey” from CV (left) and “His Vision Returns” from CVI (right).

Speaking of Celebration VI, while researching, I saw a mention that Chris was one of the artists that worked on the badges for that year. He confirmed this for me and you’ll hear us talk about it on the episode. As a reminder, here’s what the art for CVI looked like…it’s a real trip, lol.

Chris continued his Celebration stay with the piece “Execution Order” at Celebration Europe II, and this one gives me chills.

Also in my research, I found a picture courtesy of the great archive on rebelscum.com of Chris at his art show booth! Love that life-size AT-AT in the background, classic Celebration.

The next four pieces are all incredible, including “The Folly of TK421” (Anaheim 2015), “Courier Intercepted” (Orlando 2017), “Reunion of Scoundrels” (Chicago 2019, absolutely amazing), and “Meltdown on Hoth” (from the 2020 canceled event). The way Chris draws these OT characters captures their personalities so well.

Next up is maybe my favorite of Chris’s work (although it’s a close race between this and “Reunion of Scoundrels”), from Anaheim 2022 “The Princess’ Gambit”. I love the way that Chris illustrates Leia and the little exchange happening between Lando and Chewie. This is absolutely canon in my mind, the gang planning the rescue we see in ROTJ.

And finally, here’s the art that Chris has created for Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025. Titled “Freighters of Fortune”, it features several ships and the heroes that pilot them, including the Millennium Falcon, which Chris told me is one of his favorite subjects to illustrate. The colors are so striking and beautiful.

Be sure to find Chris on Facebook and Instagram! And if you’re going to Japan this month, do not miss the art show featuring Chris and so many other incredible artists. See them all here! And thanks again to Chris for coming on the show.
